
Garry entered the elevator industry in March of 1972 with local 81 in San Antonio, Texas for Dover / Hunter-Hayes Elevator Company. He brought with him his naval experiences as a jet engine mechanic from 1966-1969. After four years as a construction and service helper he passed the mechanic’s exam in 1976. Garry was a resident mechanic from 1976-1978 in Roswell, New Mexico. He then moved to Port Arthur, Texas from 1978 to 1980 as a resident mechanic. In 1981 he returned to San Antonio to work for Dover on a service route. Garry was elected Business Representative/Financial Secretary of Local 81, San Antonio, in 1996. In September of 2002 he was selected to serve as an Area Coordinator for the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund (EIWPF).
Garry’s involvement with local 81 prior to becoming Business Representative was broad. He served as Recording Secretary twice in the early 1970s. In the mid 1980s he served his local as Vice President followed by being President in the late 1980s. He continued as President until he was elected Business Representative in 1996.
Garry has been a National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) Instructor since 1982. He has taught all NEIEP courses and attended all three levels of Instructor Training. He has received various Dover Training courses such as Dover TIP School (Composite and Hydraulic), TIII and TIV Adjuster Training and DMC Training.
Saint Philip’s college awarded Garry an Associates degree in Computer Maintenance. Garry holds membership in the ASME and the QEI Code Committee. He is a member of the A17 Inspectors Manual Committee and the A17 New Technologies Committee. He was QEI certified in June of 2001.
Garry was assigned the position as Assistant National Director as of May 2008.
