
Roger D. Merritt
AREA COORDINATOR
After serving his country in the US Air Force, Roger (R.D.) began his career on August 1st, 1972 with Otis Elevator Company in Miami, FL. He worked as a contract service helper in the downtown Miami area. He became a Local 71 IUEC member in early 1973. In 1975 he transferred his membership to Mobile, Alabama IUEC Local 124.
R.D. became a mechanic in 1978 while working on a contract service route for Otis. He became a Local Representative for Otis in the Pensacola, FL area. He first served his local as a Trustee, then as a member of Local 124's Executive Board between 1977-1980. He was elected Business Representative of Local 124 in 1985, also serving as Financial Secretary-Treasurer and correspondent to the journal. He served six terms as Business Representative. In his tenure as Business Representative he served as a trustee for the Mobile/Pensacola Building Trades Council and also served on the Alabama AFL-CIO organizing committee. He was recognized as an Honorary Treasurer for the state of Alabama. General President Dana A. Brigham appointed R.D. as the IUEC liaison for the Elevator - Escalator Safety Foundation in March of 2001. R.D. also serves as a Board Member for this foundation. In August of 2001 the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund (EIWPF) National Director Jesse L. Bielefeld appointed R.D. as an Area Coordinator. Roger is an OSHA approved instructor for the OSHA 10-Hour Safety Course.
R.D's latest accomplishment is to have obtained his OSHA 500 Master Instructor status.
