Ward started his career in the elevator industry in 1980 working in Newfoundland for a non-signatory company and was instrumental in helping to organize them from the bottom up in 1983.
In 1984 Ward moved to Nova Scotia worked on construction for Dover and Otis as a helper.
Ward completed the CEIEP program and passed mechanics exam in June 1988 and continued working for Otis doing construction and repair. In 1990 Dover Elevator (TKE) offered Ward a maintenance job and he continued there until becoming Business Manager of Local 125/125A in February 2008.
Ward served on every position on Local 125 Executive Board and was also a qualified CEIEP Instructor and taught the CEIEP program for 10 years.
During his time as Business Manager, he was appointed by the General President to serve as a Trustee for the IUEC Canadian Pension, Welfare, Education Plans and Market Recovery Fund Trust.
Under a Ministry Appointment Order, Ward was appointed to the Nova Scotia Elevator and Lifts Appeal Board.
He was also appointed to several other boards and committees including New Brunswick Trade Advisory Board, Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council, Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency and five Building Trade Unions throughout Atlantic Canada.
Ward was the Business Manager for Local 125 125/A from February 2008 until taking a position as National Coordinator on October 2021 for EIWPF responsible for Canadian Market Recovery Fund and other related matters in Canada.
