DEI & MHFA
Nicole, who identifies with she/her pronouns, currently resides in New Westminster, Canada, situated on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Qayqayt First Nation, as well as all Coast Salish peoples. Her journey in the elevator trade began in 2008 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, she became a proud member of IUEC Local 82 in 2009. Prior to joining the elevator trade, Nicole pursued higher education after graduating with honors in 2000, studying Criminology and English at university. It was after returning from a break attending university, where she had lived abroad in Taiwan teaching English, that she discovered her passion for the elevator trade and subsequently applied to the IUEC.
Seeking greater opportunities in the construction sector, Nicole relocated to the Vancouver area to work on larger projects with Otis Elevator. She completed her apprenticeship through the Canadian Elevator Industry Educational Program in July 2013 and obtained certification as a Class A Elevator Mechanic with Technical Safety BC the following year. During her tenure in New Equipment at Otis Elevator, Nicole served as a foreperson and adjuster, overseeing final inspections on projects.
In 2019, Nicole transitioned to TK Elevator, where she worked in the Quoted Service Department for five years. Alongside her professional responsibilities, she actively engaged in union activities, serving two terms on the Executive Board from 2017 to 2021 and becoming the first woman elected to a leadership position in her local. She also served as a Shop Steward at both Otis and TK Elevator.
Recognizing the importance of promoting equity and inclusivity in the trades, Nicole was one of the founding directors of the BC Trades Equity Society (formerly the BC Tradeswomen Society) in 2016. Through partnerships and government funding, the society established the BC Centre for Women in the Trades to enhance the culture and retention of tradeswomen. Nicole currently serves as the President of the BC Trades Equity Society and sits on the governance board for the BC Centre for Women in the Trades.
Nicole’s advocacy work extends beyond her local community, as she has been a speaker at numerous events since 2016. Her contributions were recognized in 2023 when she received Nabtu’s Tradeswomen Heroes Award. In 2022, she was honored to co-chair the Governor General Canadian Leadership Conference, where she had the opportunity to engage with prominent leaders such as Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada, and Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
Driven by a commitment to continuous learning, Nicole has pursued various certificates, including: Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace; Gender, Race and Equity; and Indigenous Canada. Most recently, she commenced her role as a National Coordinator at the EIWPF on March 1st, 2024, where she will focus on projects related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the industry.
